Biography

Born in Shropshire, British mezzo-soprano Lucy Gibbs recently made her European operatic debut as ‘Diane’ in Gluck’s Iphigénie en Tauride for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen. In the same year, she performed for LaGeste in Vake Poes; of hoe God verdween at the Thalia Theater, Hamburg, written and directed by Lisaboa Houbrechts. Her other recent operatic roles include ‘L’enfant’ in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges for Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, 'Sesto' in a performance of Händel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto with B'Rock Orchestra, and ‘Flora’ in Jonathan Dove’s The Enchanted Pig with SPECTRA ensemble. For the Royal College of Music Opera, Lucy’s roles included ‘La Duchessa’ in Respighi’s La bella dormente nel bosco and covering ‘Un Pâtre’ in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges, and covering ‘Older Woman’ in Jonathan Dove’s Flight.

Alongside her performances, Lucy was a ‘Stipendiatin’ at the 6. Internationale Opernwerkstatt Waiblingen run by Thomas Hampson and Melanie Diener, and a ‘Jeune Talent’ at the 2024 Académie Ravel as part of the Festival Ravel in St Jean-de-Luz. She was a SongEasel young artist, alongside Daniel Adipradhana, and a member of the 10th cohort of Genesis Sixteen. She has also participated in public masterclasses with Paul Daniel, Anne Sophie von Otter, Richard Egarr, Sasha Cooke, Dorothea Röschmann, Véronique Gens and Keval Shah.

Lucy was a member of the ensemble of the National Gilbert & Sullivan Company and performed in The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado, and The Yeoman of the Guard for the Buxton International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in 2023. She was also a member of the ensemble for RCM opera in Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld, Respighi’s La bella dormente nel bosco, and Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges.

On the concert stage, Lucy recently performed as Alto soloist in Haydn’s Nelson Mass with the Choir of Merton College, Oxford and Britten Sinfonia conducted by Benjamin Nicholas, Mozart’s Requiem with the Occam Singers conducted by Nicholas O’Neill and Bach’s St. John Passion with the Oxford Bach Choir in the Sheldonian Theatre. Lucy has a passion for performing contemporary music and collaborating with composers. She has premiered works by Laurence Rosenthal, Oscar Ridout, Miguel de la Rosa, Pedro González Álvarez, Asher Joyce, Jonty Watt and Darren Sng.

Upcoming performances include Handel’s Messiah with Ipswich Choral Society at Ipswich Minster, and a Schubertiade concert for SongEasel with Jocelyn Freeman in Blackheath Halls.

Lucy graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music in London, where she was gratefully supported by the Robert Lancaster scholarship and the Josephine Baker Trust. Prior to that, she read Music at Merton College, Oxford, where she was also a choral scholar in the Choir of Merton College, Oxford. In 2025, Lucy graduated as a young artists from the International Opera Academy in Ghent, Belgium.
